PINTU design challenge

Key result

Find and propose improvements or features that will benefit Retail Pro Traders and Degen in PINTU Futures.

The challenge

Find pain point and craft design that will improve PINTU Futures trading experience in Mobile App

Defining the problem

I'll focus on gathering insights through secondary research from online reviews and feedbacks of PINTU app. I'll also adding competitive benchmarking on how other exchanges deliver their user experience.

Secondary research - reviews and feedbacks

I analyzed public feedback from forums, social media, and app stores to uncover user pain points in PINTU’s Futures trading. This was supported by benchmarking top exchanges to identify UX gaps and improvement areas.

Insufficient charting & analysis tools

PINTU lacks robust charting options and advanced indicators, making it difficult for experienced traders to perform deep technical analysis and act on rapid price shifts.

Limited order control & customization

Compared to Binance or OKX, PINTU provides fewer advanced order types (e.g. OCO, trailing stop, iceberg). This restricts traders from executing complex strategies and managing risk effectively.

Lack of futures-specific onboarding

New users entering Futures often feel overwhelmed due to the absence of guided walkthroughs or simulation modes, leading to hesitation and potential drop-off before their first trade.

No real-time liquidation & margin alerts

Many users report missing critical liquidation thresholds due to the absence of customizable real-time notifications, causing avoidable losses — especially during market spikes.

Competitive benchmarking

I'm benchmarking Binance, Bitget, OKX, MEXC, and Bybit as popular exchanges across the world. Here I'm highlighting their top features to be considered in PINTU improvement

Features

Target users

Rationale

Copy trading

Retail Pro & Degen

Aligns with attracting new users and making trading accessible. Could differentiate PINTU in the market and drive volume if done with proper risk controls.

Cross Collateral

Retail Pro

Increases capital efficiency but adds complexity. PINTU might prioritize simpler margin flows initially; could be medium-term upgrade for advanced users.

One-Click AI Bots

Retail Pro & Degen

Adds innovation and could appeal to a niche segment. However, requires user education and robust support. PINTU might rate this lower priority than social trading, but a medium-term opportunity to stand out.

Scope and opportunities

Opportunity solution tree

After defining the metrics, I analyzed the problems identified in the secondary research and insights from competitive benchmarking and began exploring solutions by generating experiments and opportunities using this framework. Here are the results of this framework.

Metrics scope

To provide solutions that align with the challenge, I explored and select trading app metrics that will support the solutions and help achieve the challenge's goals. Here are the metrics I chose:

Metrics name

Rationale

Trade volume

A high trade volume reflects user trust in the platform's liquidity, toolset, and execution performance. Solutions that reduce friction or enable more efficient trades directly impact this metric.

Trading frequency

Increased frequency suggests high engagement and user confidence in the interface. UX enhancements that reduce decision-making time or increase clarity help boost this metric.

Trust & user retention

Critical for long-term sustainability. Onboarding, alerts, and educational tools reinforce user trust and reduce churn.

Impact value matrix

To implement the best solution within the given time and effort, I use the Impact-Value Matrix framework to select the solutions. The rationale for each solution is defined below.

Solution

Rationale

Copy Trading

Lets beginners follow top traders’ strategies. High impact on acquisition and volume, but requires strong risk control and compliance work.

Cross Collateral

Improves capital efficiency by allowing unused assets to back trades. Great for pros, but backend risk and wallet infra need upgrades.

AI Bots

Appeals to advanced users and automates strategy execution. Needs heavy dev effort and clear user education to avoid misuse.

Guided Onboarding

Eases learning curve for new traders. Boosts retention with low build cost; can be implemented via tutorials or checklist flows.

Margin/Liquidation Alerts

Helps users act before forced closures. Simple to implement via push/in-app notifications, and improves trust and safety.

Basic Chart Upgrades

Adds essential TA tools like indicators and timeframe controls. Low effort, yet builds credibility and usability.

Trailing Stop & Other Orders

Attracts advanced users, but adds complexity in UI and backend logic. Useful, yet not core for casual users.

Full Pro Charting

Valuable to experts, but resource-intensive and niche. Considered high effort with limited broad impact.

Post-Only / Reduce-Only

Niche order flags for precision trading. Easy to build, but relevant only to seasoned users.

Demo Trading

Risk-free learning space. Low lift, but doesn’t convert well into real trading behavior—limited impact.

Selected improvement

Based on the Impact-Value Matrix and the metrics focused on this challenge, the best improvement to develop for Pro Retail and Degen are the Copy Trading and Cross Collateral. Here are the rationales, considering both the users' and the PINTU's perspectives:

Solution

User's

PINTU's

Copy trading

Allows users with less experience to replicate proven strategies. Reduces decision fatigue and builds trading confidence.

Boosts user acquisition and engagement. Drives trading volume and retention with minimal learning barrier.

Cross Collateral

Automates repetitive trading logic and appeals to tech-savvy traders. Offers 24/7 execution without emotional bias.

Improves asset stickiness and wallet activity. Enhances overall AUM and increases transaction depth.
